Edge with Hemstitch - Orlo con Punto a giorno

Perhaps the hemstitch is the easiest stitch to finish a hem.
Despite the practical use of this stitch, it can also be used for decorative purposes:
some threads of fabric are tied together making a row of small openings more or less large, and these bunches of threads can then be further arranged and embellished.
Previously we had saw how to make edges and corners, and preparing linen fabric to work the hemstitch. Now we see the steps to obtain a perfect edge finished with the hemstitch.
In the following photos we can see how to begin our work.
This stitch goes from left to right on the back of the work; first of all we need to secure the threads cut so we start from the corner with very close stitches.

hemstitch - orlo a giorno

Then we start grouping some trheads of fabric (in this example I took five threads). The needle passes behind the threads and out to the front. Pull the needle so that the working thread wraps around the threads of the fabric, then take two threads of the folded edge.  Position the needle for the next stitch and repeat these steps.

Hemstitch - Orlo a giorno

Finished the first row of the hemstitch, start the second row.
Turn the work so that the bunches are positioned upside down and begin from the corner again.
Pass the needle into the fabric to secure the working thread inside some stitches and work the hemstitch as before.

As you have seen the execution of the hemstitch is very simple and I hope you enjoy it.
Soon I'll show you some of the many variations that can be made and that too alone are real ornaments.

Embroidered sprig - Rametto ricamato

Good morning everybody,
in my page "Designs" you'll find new patterns inside the section "Embroidery - Ricamo".
But here, I want to show you one of many results that can be achieved with the ancient art of embroidery.
I stitched these sprigs on the corners of a Baby Cover, but it can be used on any other article, because its size is medium and is a very delicate embroidery design.
Of course you can combine this embroidery with a tatting motif, the effect will no doubt be amazing.

Buongiorno a tutti,
nella pagina "Designs" troverete nuovi modelli all'interno della sezione "
Embroidery - Ricamo".

Tatting silver bracelet

Tatting silver bracelet

The thread I used to make this project is a special silvery thread very thin and moderately metallic. The effect is extraordinary, it seems really silver.
The motif is simple and is repeated throughout the length of the bracelet. The motives are separated by two beads added to joining picots.
Click here to watch the video with all images.

Edges and corners - Orli e angoli

Dear friends,
after publication of the post "Il corredo della nonna", many of you asked me how to hem linen fabric and apply tatting lace.
There are different ways according to the result wanted, for example tatting lace can be applied on the edge or inside of it. To apply the lace on the edge we can use "il punto cordoncino" and cuting the fabric excess. In this case the edge of our project will be the tatting lace.
Otherwise we can make edges and corners of linen fabric, then to apply the lace with hidden stitches. To begin we see how to make edges and corners to linen fabric.

To cut linen fabric right, pulling a weft thread on the four sides after taking exact measurements of the project (including edges).
Measure 5 cm from the edge.

Edges and corners - Orli e angoli

Edges and corners - Orli e angoli

Pull 5 weft threads on each side leaving 1 cm of thread on the corners.

Tirate 5 fili di tessuto su ogni lato, lasciando 1 cm di filo agli angoli.
Edges and corners - Orli e angoli

Be careful because there may be different thickness between the weft and warp. In this case pull 1 or 2 wires more where necessary.

Measure 1 cm from the edge and fold the fabric as shown in the images.
